What Is Medicare Supplemental Insurance?
Medicare (gov’t healthcare insurance for US citizens 65 and older) does not cover one hundred percent of your medical expenses.
According to medicare.gov – medicare supplemental insurance is an insurance policy that helps to pay some of your health care expenses that the original medicare does not cover, such as:
- Co-payments
- Co-insurance
- Medical Deductibles
They also recommend that when you are shopping for a policy make sure that you are comparing the same policy.
When Can & Should You Purchase Them
The optimal time to purchase medicare supplement is while you are in your six month open enrollment period.
When you are in this time period you are able to purchase any medicare supplement policy sold in your state (even if you currently have health issues).
This time frame starts automatically the month that you turn 65 and enrolled in Medicare Part B for medical insurance.
When this time frame expires, you may not be able to purchase a medicare supplemental insurance plan
If you are able to purchase a plan, it may be more expensive.
When You Are In The Open Enrollment Period
During this time period, those with health related issues can purchase any of the policies for the same premiums as those with no health related issues.
When You Are Out Of The Open Enrollment Period
If you wait to apply until you are in this time period, you lose the guarantee that an insurance provider will sell you a policy if you do not meet the required medical underwriting guidelines.
