When first signing up for Medicare Supplement Open Enrollment (also known as Medigap), most folks have several questions which we will address below.

Since Medicare Part A and B can leave worrying gaps in your medical coverage, it is always good to know that you can sign up for Medicare Supplement insurance.

This will help to cover you for all those additional expenses such as deductibles and copayments.

Possibly the most important factor to consider when it comes to Medicare Supplement insurance is your timing.

The time of year you sign up for Medicare Supplement insurance is very important because this will determine how many options you have available as well as the coverage itself.

Additionally, your timing could determine what your premium is and if the insurance company will cover you for any pre-existing conditions.

Can I get Medicare supplement plan anytime?

Yes, you can apply for Medicare Supplement insurance at any time!

The only stipulation for enrollment is that you have to currently be on either a Medicare Part A or Part B plan.

It is important to note, however, that the Medicare plan (or Medicare Supplement plan) has no obligation to accept you unless you have guaranteed issue rights.

When can you change your Medicare supplement plan?

You can change your Medicare Supplement play at any time.

You also have 30 days in which you can decide if you want to stay on the plan.

This 30-day time period allows you to make an informed decision about your new Medicare Supplement plan and whether it is the right one for you.

Note, however, that you will have to pay 2 premiums during this 30-day period (for your old and new plan).

Is there an open enrollment for Medicare Supplement plans?

Yes, there is open enrollment for Medicare Supplement plans.

Your open enrollment starts on the 1st day that your part B begins to be effective.

If your coverage of Part A and Part B begins on June 1, then your enrollment period will last for 6 months and end on November 30th.

For most seniors this period occurs when they turn 65 years old.

Some seniors choose to delay enrollment into Part B if they are still working, and some other people are eligible early due to a disability.

Make a note of when the open enrollment period is because this is the only time in which you may enroll for any Medicare Supplement plan.

During open enrollment, you have the choice of several plans, namely A, B, C, D, F, G, K, L, M or N, so it is definitely worth trying to wait until open enrollment!

Can you be denied a Medicare supplement plan?

Yes and no!

Open Enrollment is a 1 time, time-period in which you can enroll in any Medicare Supplement plan and you will not have to answer any medical questions

The insurance companies offering Medicare Supplement plans can’t turn you down within your personal open enrollment time period.

If you apply outside of open enrollment, normal medical underwriting will determine if your application is accepted or not.

During open enrollment, you cannot be denied coverage or even be charged a higher premium due to a pre-existing condition.
