The Federal Government does not offer Federal Employee Short Term Disability Insurance in most cases and it is up to the employee to seek this coverage on their own. Short Term Disability Insurance for Federal Employees provides a pay check when you can’t work. Whether it is an accident, injury, sickness, or pregnancy, being off of work affects our income. Most people live pay check to paycheck and can’t go more then 14 or 30 days without receiving income
This results in bills not getting paid, bill collector’s calling, or even worse, bankruptcy. Besides regular health insurance, having short term disability insurance is one of the most important types of insurance you should have.

Is Federal Employee Short Term Disability Insurance Affordable?

Most employees will pay about an hours wage a week for short term disability coverage. This is a small price to pay to protect your most valuable asset, your income. Typically premiums can be paid through payroll deduction as a Federal Employee or through bank draft.

Does Federal Employee Short Term Disability Insurance cover pre-existing conditions?

Typically policies available to Federal Government Employees are guaranteed issue up to $2000 – $3000 per month in benefits. Pre-existing conditions are typically not covered in the first 12 months of the policy. If you are looking for Short Term Disability Insurance to cover something you already know about and are going to be off of work in the first 12 months of coverage, you may be out of luck.

Does Short Term Disability cover Maternity?

Short Term Disability Insurance policies for Federal Employees typically will cover maternity or pregnancy, as long as you deliver after having the policy in place for 10 months. This means you can not be pregnant when you purchase a policy.
